A Note From Your Nurses

We are excited to be starting a new school year and look forward to a healthy year for all our students.  In order to do that we have a few suggestions to help ensure the health of our students and some reminders to all parents to avoid confusion and to ensure the best care for your child.  Please read the following reminders on the topics of:

·        Fighting dehydration

·        Mid-morning snack

·        Doctor's Medication Order and Consent form

·        Medication administration

·        Recuperation after illness

·        Health Information and History sheet

With the heat that we have been experiencing we are concerned that all students stay hydrated throughout the school day.  We encourage everyone to bring a water bottle to school and to use it throughout the day.  Each teacher may have their own rules about water bottle use in their class room so you need to abide by those rules.  We recommend water bottles with pop top lids instead of screw off lids to help prevent spills.  We also would like each student to take home their water bottle each night, clean it thoroughly, and bring it back the next morning filled with fresh cold water.

A good breakfast is important to a child's performance in school, as well as their health.  We do realize that not all children eat a good breakfast every day so we encourage students to bring a healthy snack (vegetable sticks, fruit, crackers & cheese, granola bars) to school.  We believe students do better in class if they don't have too long of a space between meals, and those with later lunch times especially need a small snack to tide them over.  Again you must abide by each individual teacher's rules regarding snacks.

At registration time everyone was given a copy of the Doctor's Medication Order & Consent form.  This sheet needs to be filled out and signed by both your child's pediatrician and a parent and returned to the Health Room.  We need this form on file in the Health Room in order for us to give any medication - even over-the-counter medication - to your child throughout the school year.  If we do not have this form on file and you send in medicine for your child we cannot administer it.  Please send this form to your child's doctor and have them sign it and return it to us.  They can fax it to school at 251-1155 or mail it to us, or you can bring it to us.  If you do not have a copy of this form let us know and we will send home another copy with your child.

If you want us to be able to give your child any medicines throughout the school year (including non-prescription medicines and cough drops) you must send in your own medicine in the original container.  Please do not send in any medicines in a zip lock bag and ask us to give it to your child.  We cannot legally administer any medicine to your child that is not in the original container.  There will be no exceptions to this rule.  We do not store any "stock" medications in the Health Room to give to students.  Any time we give medicine we must have a signed consent form from a parent.  These consent forms were sent home at registration and more can be obtained in the Health Room.  These forms are entitled "Medication Permit".

All medications to be taken at school must be kept in the Health Room.  Please do not send medicines in your child's lunch box or backpack.  For the safety of all our students, we need to monitor all medicines in the Health Room.

Cough drops must be kept in the Health Room and need to have a doctor's consent signed before we will give them to you child.  Because of the choking hazard, all students need to stay in the Health Room while they have a cough drop in their mouth.  We will allow them 5 minutes to suck on a cough drop and then they will need to chew it up or spit it out and return to class.

Please read the flier sent home today entitled "When Should I Keep Junior Home From School".  As discussed in the flier, a child must be kept home for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting and shall be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.  If we send your child home and they return to school before their 24 hours is up, we will call you and have you take your child home.  Please help us protect your child and the other students by giving them adequate time to recuperate.

Thank you for helping us keep your children healthy.  Please fill out all necessary paperwork now so that if your child needs medication at a later date we are able to administer it in a timely manner and not have to wait for paperwork to be sent to us at that time.
